Before you buy: one question to answer first
Do they already have a turntable? If yes, a record is the most personal thing you can give, but it has to be right. If no, or if you're not sure, a subscription or a gift towards their setup removes the guesswork entirely.

Under £20: The thoughtful record
A single vinyl record is still one of the best gifts you can give a collector. At this budget you're looking at used records, new 7-inches, or mid-priced new pressings. The key is picking something they don't already own, which means you need to know their collection, or ask.
What to look for: a record in their favourite genre, from an artist they love but might not own on vinyl, or something you know they've been hunting. If you're not sure, lean towards a well-known album on a quality pressing rather than something obscure.
What to avoid: the obvious greatest hits albums in well-known genres, a jazz collector probably already owns Kind of Blue. A soul collector already has What's Going On. Think one step sideways from the obvious.

Under £50: A record they'll remember finding
At this budget you can get into new pressings of beloved albums, audiophile reissues, coloured vinyl editions, or a small bundle of two or three well-chosen records. This is the sweet spot for a serious gift, enough to show you thought about it, not so much that it feels like showing off.
Some directions that work well at this tier:
- An audiophile reissue: a record they already love, remastered on 180g vinyl. Sounds noticeably better and often comes with liner notes. Blue Note reissues, ECM records, and Mobile Fidelity editions land well here.

At this budget you're looking at box sets, rare original pressings, or a three-month subscription run. Each of these works for a different type of collector.
Box sets are the go-to for the fan who has everything. A well-produced box set, complete with booklets, prints, and additional pressings: is the kind of thing a collector will display and reach for repeatedly. Look for editions from Craft Recordings, 4AD, and Fat Possum at this tier.

For the new collector
Don't overthink it. A well-chosen record in a genre they love, plus a note explaining why you picked it, is better than any gadget. If they've just bought a turntable, something they'll want to play immediately, a familiar album in great sound, is the right call.

For the audiophile

Lean into niche: a pressing from a label they collect, a regional release, something from a genre adjacent to their main interest. Think specialist label pressings and regional reissues: the kind of thing they'd hope to find themselves on a good day at the market.
For the genre obsessive

A few things that don't make good vinyl gifts
Worth saying plainly:
- Record cleaning machines under £50: the cheap ones do more harm than good. If you want to give a cleaning gift, a quality carbon fibre brush and a bottle of proper cleaning fluid is more useful.
- Generic "vinyl lover" novelty items: mugs, socks, wall art shaped like a record. These aren't bad people gifts, but they're not vinyl gifts. A serious collector would rather have one good record.
- A record player they didn't choose: unless you know exactly what they want and at what budget, a turntable is a deeply personal purchase. Get them a record instead, or a voucher towards the deck they've been eyeing.
