What is an obi strip on a vinyl record?

An obi (帯) is a paper strip wrapped around the spine of a Japanese vinyl pressing. It carries the album title and tracklist in Japanese, plus catalogue and price information. The obi is detachable, which is why so many Japanese pressings exist without their original obi, and why complete records with intact obi command a premium.

Why are Japanese vinyl pressings considered superior?

Three reasons. First, Japanese pressing plants, particularly JVC, Toshiba and Victor, used higher-grade vinyl with consistently quiet surfaces. Second, mastering for the Japanese market often used different (sometimes superior) source tapes. Third, sleeves and inserts were typically printed to a higher standard, including the now-iconic obi strip.

Are Japanese pressings worth more than other versions?

Accepted Answer

Often yes, particularly when the obi strip is intact. Original Japanese pressings of catalogue jazz, soul, and 70s rock can sell for 2-5× the price of US or UK pressings of the same album. Audiophile reissue series like the King Records 100% Pure series or the Japanese MFSL co-pressings are particularly sought after.

How do I know if a Japanese pressing has its original obi?

Look for the strip wrapped around the spine of the sleeve. Original obis are made of relatively thin paper, often with a slight gloss. Reproductions exist but tend to be on heavier card stock. Wear, fading, or pinholes (where the obi was once stapled) are normal for vintage strips and don't reduce value much.
