    The Deep House Labels That Defined the Sound

    Deep house is a label-driven culture, and the imprint often matters as much as the artist. Six labels carry most of the canonical and contemporary releases UK collectors chase.

    Strictly Rhythm

    New York 1989 onwards. The defining label of vocal house and deep house, over 1,000 12-inches.

    Nu Groove

    Frank and Karen Mendez's NYC label, 1988 to 1992. Burrell Brothers, Rheji Burrell, Bobby Konders.

    Prescription

    Ron Trent and Chez Damier (Chicago and Detroit). Defined the deeper, more spiritual end of 90s house.

    Music From Memory

    Amsterdam reissue label, 2013 onwards. Compiles obscure Balearic, ambient and proto-deep-house.

    Aus Music

    Will Saul's UK label. Modern deep house and tech house from Bicep, Midland, Mall Grab and others.

    Rhythm Section International

    Bradley Zero's London label. Soulful, jazz-tinged contemporary deep house. Strong UK identity.

    What to look for in a deep house 12-inch

    Deep house lives on the 12-inch, and 12-inches punish bad storage. Check the run-out groove for a matrix number if you are buying an original, since a lot of the early Strictly Rhythm and Nu Groove material has been repressed and the labels are near identical. Expect surface noise on a well-played club record and judge it on the audible grade, not the sleeve. We grade every record to Goldmine standards and we say what we hear, so a VG+ from us is a VG+.
