Spiritual Jazz Essentials
No serious jazz collection is complete without the spiritual jazz canon. Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda (Impulse!) remains one of the most transcendent listening experiences committed to vinyl — the combination of harp, Pharoah Sanders' tenor and Rashied Ali's percussion is simply unmatched. Pharoah Sanders' Karma is equally essential, with "The Creator Has a Master Plan" stretching across an entire side of wax.
For something less well-known, seek out Morning Song by Hailu Mergia or the Strata-East catalogue — Alternate Spaces by Donald Byrd and Music Inc. by Charles Tolliver are criminally undervalued.
Modal & Hard Bop Cornerstones
Miles Davis's Kind of Blue is the obvious entry point — and for good reason. The 2024 Craft Recordings remaster from original analogue tapes is the definitive pressing. John Coltrane's A Love Supreme (Impulse!) and Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage (Blue Note) round out a trio that every collection needs.
For deeper cuts, look at Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil, Andrew Hill's Point of Departure and Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch! — all Blue Note pressings that reward repeated listening.
Contemporary Jazz Worth Collecting
The London jazz scene continues to produce world-class vinyl. Shabaka Hutchings (in all his projects — Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, Shabaka), Nubya Garcia and Ezra Collective are all pressing records that will become the sought-after originals of the future. Kamasi Washington's The Epic triple LP on Brainfeeder is already a modern classic.
From Chicago, Makaya McCraven and the International Anthem roster (Rob Mazurek, Damon Locks, Angel Bat Dawid) are redefining what jazz means on vinyl.
Buying Tips
When buying jazz vinyl, pressing quality matters enormously. Original Blue Note and Prestige pressings command high prices, but reissues from Music Matters, Analogue Productions and Craft Recordings are often mastered from original tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl. Always check whether a reissue is AAA (all-analogue) — it makes a real difference to the listening experience.
